Since 1971

Ozalj museum was founded in 1971 and it is the heir to the museum that was called Museum of Brethren of the Croatian Dragon (Muzej Dužbe “Braća Hrvatskog Zmaja”), which had been founded in 1930. During its history, Ozalj museum has continually developed into an institution, which offers the cultural growth of the Ozalj area and guards the historical heritage of this area from its Neolithic beginnings.

6000 years of history

Its collection includes 6000 years of history, which can be tracked through written documents and archaeological artefacts. The permanent collection holds a special interest, especially the part about Slava Raškaj, an Ozalj-based painter considered to be the greatest Croatian watercolourist of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Frankopani and Zrinski

Then the early Middle Ages and the story of large families are included, with special emphasis on the Frankopans and the Zrinski and Ozalj cultural circles. The collection of weapons from the time when the last Zrinskis fought the Turks continues with the Baroque period and the Society “Brothers of the Croatian Dragon” who in 1928 became the owners of the Old Town of Ozalj and organized a museum collection, as a kind of “museum within a museum”.
